Obituaries

Franklin Dee Bogle, age 82, of Woodbury, TN passed away on February 6, 2019 at Vanderbilt Palliative Care Unit.  Frank died as a result of a fall at his home on December 30 that led to a month of severe complications that he no longer had the strength to fight. 
 
Franklin married Georgia Reed, the love of his life, in 1961, who survives him today.  Franklin is survived by his step-daughter, Ceola Sowder (Bill); granddog, “Griffy”; two grandsons, Matthew West and Mason Sowder (Morgan); two step-grandchildren, Jesse Sowder and Ryan Sowder (April); step great grandchildren, Elijah and Patrick of Murfreesboro; his sister, Lucy Cooper and his nieces Connie (Mark) Smith and Dawn (Douglas) Adcock all of Murfreesboro; great nephew, Michael Smith and a host of cousins and other family members.
 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lebron and Cathelean Harris Bogle.
 
 
All of his friends called him ‘Frank’. He was a man who loved and served his community in Woodbury. Everyone that knew Frank has listened to countless stories about the people in his life.  He loved his family and he loved the kids on his school bus routes.  Frank was involved in transportation all of his life.  He served in the Army in Germany   in the US Army Transportation Corps.  He retired from Samsonite where he worked in Shipping/Receiving and was also a semi-truck driver after 37 years.  He was the Woodbury Fire Chief for 9 years. He was also a Deputy Sheriff for Cannon County. He was a member of the Woodbury Church of Christ where he drove the church bus on Sundays.  After retiring, he worked at the Stones River Hospital, in the summer he mowed yards for neighbors and his final job was driving the school bus for 14 years before his health began to fail.
 
 
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home Chapel with Bro Herb Alsup officiating.  Burial will follow at the Reed Cemetery.  Visitiation with the family will be from 4 pm until 8 pm Friday, February 8, 2019.

Betty Sue Elder Jennings, age 84, of Woodbury passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at Alive Hospice of Murfreesboro.  She was a native of Coffee Co. 
Survivors include her children, Pennie Lee Jennings Long of Woodbury, Jerrie Sue Jennings (Jeffrey) Macintire of Clarksville, Sandra Jennings (J.R.) Morton of Murfreesboro, & Grady David Jennings of Woodbury; Grandchildren, Nathan Jennings, Shannon Morton Patterson, Scott (Abby) Macintire, Beth Macintire, & Amy Macintire; Great Grandchildren, Marcus, Leo, & Zane Macintire, & Presley Patterson.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Thomas & Nell Lee DeBerry Elder; Husband, Grady Houston Jennings, Jr. & Siblings, Wilma Elder, Edward Elder, Thomas Elder, & Earl Elder.
 
Sue was a member of the church of Christ and was retired from the United States Postal Service.  If you knew Sue, you knew she loved to play Rook.  And most Saturday nights, you would find her with the Cannon County Rook Club, where she was a founding member.
 
Funeral Services will be 11 AM Saturday, February 9, 2019 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Herb Alsup officiating.  Interment will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery (Coffee Co.).  Visitation with the family will be from 4 to 8 PM Friday, February 8, 2019 at the funeral home.

Edward Clay England age 84 passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Life Care Center of SpartaMr. England was born in Sparta, TN July 6, 1934 to Alpha England and Della Rice England.
 
 
Mr. England served our country in the United States Army 1960 till 1964. After his service he enjoyed farming, church and family.
 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Douglas Carl England.
 
 
He is survived by his wife Joyce Hall Melton England; son and wife, Karl and Cindy England; brother, Alpha Eugene England and wife Arleen; grandson, Joshua England; stepsons, Gentry Melton and wife Zarita, and Keith Melton and wife Rachel; step grandsons, Preston Melton and Kelby Melton; step granddaughter, Olivia Drennan.
 
 
Arrangements:
The family will receive friends Monday, February 4, 2019 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. at Thurman Funeral Home.
 
 
Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Thurman Funeral Home. Officiating will be Bro. Steve Gerhart and Alpha Eugene England. Interment will follow at Black Oak Cemetery. James Edmond Prater passed away in his home on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the age of 90, surrounded by his adoring family. 
 
He was born on December 31, 1928 in Murfreesboro, TN; son of the late Benjamin Harrison Prater and Jimmie Blanton Prater.
 
 
He attended Woodbury Elementary and Leoni Elementary schools in Woodbury, TN, and graduated from Central High School in Woodbury, TN in 1949.
 
 
Mr. Prater was drafted into the U. S. Army on October 16, 1950.  He served in the Korean War with the 17th Infantry Regiment and 7th Infantry Division.  Wounded in 1951, he was hospitalized in Osaka, Japan for three months after which he returned to active duty.  He was awarded the Purple Heart.
 
 
He married Wilma Cook in 1953.  He was a carpenter by trade.  In the early 60’s he began preaching for local congregations of the Church of Christ in Cannon County, TN.  In 1966 he and his family moved to Cuba, KY where he became the minister at the Cuba Church of Christ. He later ministered to the Greenbrier Church of Christ in Madison, AL.   In 1971, he began serving as minister for the Greenfield Church of Christ in Greenfield, TN, where he preached for seven years, and later served as an elder until moving to Clarksville, TN in 2006.  Following his years in full-time ministry, he preached for various local congregations over the next 17 years. 
 
 
Mr. Prater is preceded in death by his parents, B. H. and Jimmie Blanton Prater; grandparents, James Sydney and Mary Bray Blanton and Gabriel D. and Mary Francis Prater; two sisters, Nora St. John and Lola Ramey; and four brothers, J. C. Prater, Benjamin Harrison Prater, Jr., Sheliah Haskel Prater and Truman Prater.
 
 
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wilma Cook Prater; children, Mark (Penny) Prater, Melody (Harold) Smith, Melissa (Cecil) Wood, and Michelle (Russell) Roberts; brother, Carl Eldon Prater; grandchildren, Christie Smith (Brandon) Kettle, Joshua (Ayano) Smith, Brian Prater, Barton (Emily) Prater, Bradley Prater, Garrett (Emily) Roberts, Ansley Roberts, and Kendra Roberts, great-grandchildren, Wesley Kettle, Lily Kettle, Aiden Prater, Ansley Parker, and Namiya Smith.
 
 
Services will be held at the Hilldale Church of Christ in Clarksville, TN on Saturday, February 2nd at 2:00.  The family will receive visitors from 12:00 until the time of service. 
 
 
A visitation and service will also be conducted at Smith Funeral Home in Woodbury, TN on Sunday, February 3rd at 2:00.  The family will receive guests from 1:00 until the time of service. 
 
 
Pallbearers will be Mr. Prater’s grandsons and nephews.
 
 
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leoni Cemetery Fund, Woodbury, TN, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Clarksville Christian School.

Dave Mayo, Jr. age 72 of Smithville, passed away Wednesday morning, January 30, 2019 at Alive Hospice in Murfreesboro. 
 
He was born September 26, 1946 to his parents, the late Dave and Annie May Mayo.
 
 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Elizabeth Mayo; son, Daniel Mayo; 2 sisters, Mable Mooneyham  and Jean Bilbrey and 2 brothers, Howard and George Mayo.
 
 
Dave was a member of the House of Prayer and retired from Carrier.
 
 
Survivors include 2 sons, Michael Mayo and Greg Mayo both of Smithville; 6 grandchildren, Michael Mayo, Destinee Mayo, Ashley Mayo, Gregory Mayo, Kelly Mayo and Christina Mayo; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Buddy (Marcia) Mayo, David Mayo, Teddy (Barbara) Mayo and Roy Mayo all of Woodbury; sister-in-law, Jean May of Gassaway; several nieces and nephews.
 
 
Funeral services will be conducted 2:PM Friday, February 1, 2019 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in DeKalb Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be on Thursday 12 Noon until 8:PM and Friday 10:AM until the time of the service at 2:PM.

Mr. Andrew S. Haines, 97, of Woodbury passed away on January 28, 2019.  He was born on January 11, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew S. Haines, Sr. and Edith Horne Haines; his wife, Jane Purcell and a sister, Janet Barron. 
He is survived by his sons, David (Cyndi) Haines of Woodbury and Martin (Brenda) Haines of Houston, TX; sister, Doris Smith of Philadelphia; grandchildren, Robert Bolton of Murfreesboro, Lacy (Reid) Connor of Murfreesboro, Alex (Stacey) Haines of Woodbury, Brian (Alicia) Haines of NC, Laura (Josh) Leath of Woodbury; as well as, ten great grandchildren.
 
Mr. Haines grew up in Philadelphia and met his future wife, Jane, in high school.  They became sweethearts and married.  They celebrated 69 years of marriage before her passing in 2013.  He thought fondly of her everyday since her passing and longed to be with her again.  He served his country in the US Army during World War II.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.  He was attached to Company I 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.  He parachuted into Holland as part of the D-Day invasion.  Shortly before they left for the invasion Gen. Eisenhower came and spoke with them and took pictures with some of the soldiers.  He saw combat in various parts of Europe including France, who also recently recognized his service with a medal. He was a member of the local American Legion Post #279.
 
Following his military service, he went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Penn State in Electrical Engineering.  He went to work for Burroughs Computer Systems.  They were part of the leading edge of technology at the time with the early stages of computer development.  Part of his work lead him into radar tracking systems and allowed he and Mrs. Jane to travel all over the world.  After traveling and living in many different places they made their home in Woodbury.  He was the type of man who put God, family, and country first.  His personality was always to be kind and considerate of others.  He didn’t complain, kept a positive outlook, never said bad word about anyone, and always had a smile.  He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He enjoyed getting to be with the grandkids and great grandkids whenever he could.  He and Mrs. Jane were active in their church at St. Patrick’s Anglican Church.

Faye Knox, age 76, of Readyville passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Woodbury Health & Rehab.  She was a native of Cannon Co. 
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Willis Knox of Readyville; Children, Kim (Terry) Gannon of Woodbury and Joe Knox of Woodbury; Grandchildren, Todd (Tiffany) Gannon of Murfreesboro, Luke (Christy) Knox of Murfreesboro, and Alex Knox of Readyville; Brother, Joe Alexander of La Vergne; Mother-in-law, Alberta Knox of Woodbury; and Niece, Jana Alexander of La Vergne.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents, Benton & Myrtle Howeth Alexander; Brother, Bobby Alexander; and grandson, Lincoln Knox Gannon.
 
Faye was a member of the New Hope Church of Christ and was retired from the Bank of Commerce after 33 years.

Lucille Nichols, 78, passed away Sat., Jan. 12, 2019 at Woodbury Health Care.  She was a native of Warren Co., TN.She is survived by her son, Roger Nichols of Morrison; sister, Virginia (Jackie) Lance of McMinnville; friend,  Horace Bates of AL.
She was preceded in death by her father, Tommy Sullivan; husband, Jr. Nichols; daughter-in-law, Jill Nichols and sister, Lourene Bates.
A member of the Barren Fork Baptist Church, she was a seamstress with Colonial Corp for 29 years, a homemaker and she milked cows for 12 years.
Funeral Services will be 11 am Tuesday Jan. 15, 2018 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. David Carden.  Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Warren Co., Tn. Visitation with the family will be from 4 pm to 9 pm Monday, Jan. 16, 2018.

Michael Anthony Alexander, age 53, of Woodbury passed away Friday, January 11, 2019 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  He was a native of Dekalb Co. 
Survivors include his wife, Christie Lynn Alexander of Woodbury; Son, Erik (Emilee) Buckmeyer of Woodbury; Brother, Brian (Andrea) Alexander of Woodbury; Mother-in-law, Mary Moses of Alexandria; Brother-in-law, Ronnie (Kim) Moses of Cookeville; Nephews & Niece, Hugh Braxton Alexander, Andrew Michael Alexander, Keeley Moses, & Landry Moses; and Favorite Aunt, Joyce Owen of Woodbury.  Several aunts & cousins also survive.
 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert & Margaret Alexander.
 
 
Michael was a mail carrier for United States Postal Service for 28 years in Smithville, owner of Christie Q BBQ & Catering, and a Director of Dekalb Telephone Cooperative.  He loved living life and enjoyed every day.
 
 
Funeral Services will be 12 PM Monday, January 14, 2019 in the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home.  Interment will follow at Sycamore Cemetery.  Visitation with the family will be from 12 to 8 PM, Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lillian “Ettie” Smith, 87, of Woodbury passed away on January 10, 2018 with family at her side.  She was born in Gassaway, TN on October 8, 1931.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Jake Melton and Ethel Smithson Melton and her husband, Arley Smith. 
She is survived by her sons, Roger Smith and Kevin (Tabitha) Smith both of Woodbury; three grandsons, Jonathan (Lacey) Smith, Zach (Macayla) Smith, and Reece Smith all of Woodbury; two granddaughters, Ryan Marie Smith and Paisley Lillian Smith of Woodbury; special extended family, Teresa Farless and Holly Rogers both of Woodbury.
 
Mrs. Lillian grew up in Gassaway which was a close knit and interesting area back in those days.  She met and married Arley in 1952.  They loved listening to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton’s Christmas music all year.  They enjoyed driving around at Christmas and seeing all the lights.  One of their favorite stops was Burger King.  It was an almost daily ritual.  The workers would see their car and have the order ready before they got to the window. 
 
She worked for the Colonial Shirt Factory for many years before she found her true love and calling for babysitting.  She cared for many children in the community over the years.  She was known far and wide for charging $5 a day.  This included 3 meals and snacks.  The children loved her special attention, loving smile, and special laugh.  When her sons were growing up, she made sure to feed their friends who visited too.  She and the family enjoyed going on trips to Florida and Georgia.  She and Arley also went on trips with some of his Army friends.  She was known by many family and friends as “Ettie”.  It was a special nickname given to her by Holly when she was babysitting her.  She was a long-time member of the Woodbury Church of Christ.
