Lions Hosting Owls In Basketball Tonight

The Cannon County High School basketball teams will be looking for their first district win of the season.  After a rough start in Baxter Friday, the teams will be hosting the Owls teams from Smith County High School.  Smith County Lady Owls come into Robert A Harris Gymnasium with a 4-1 overall record.  After starting the season by beating Lionettes and Lady Owls former head coach Michael Dodgen and his White County Lady Warriors, the Lady Owls were able to use that to start building a four game winning streak.  However their first district contest last Friday also ended in a close loss to Livingston 40-37.  The Owls boys team are 3-2 but won their part of the district contest against Livingston 63-46.  The Lionettes and Lions are both 0-1 in district play.  Lionettes are 2-4 overall while the Lions are 1-5.  Tonight’s game in Woodbury tips off at 6:00.  The game will be live on AM-1540/FM107.1 WBRY and streaming online at wbry.com
 

Letter Of Intent Applications Now Available

The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties’ Letter of Intent application is now available for the 2017 funding cycle.  The Letter of Intent application is the first step in the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. It is available to a wide array of diverse community organizations offering programming to benefit the community in the areas of health and financial stability. Collaborative applications are encouraged.
Qualifying organizations will be requested to outline their programming to demonstrate how a United Way partnership specifically provides an outcome in one or more priority issues within health or financial stability. Programs that most closely align with United Way’s mission and meet the criteria will be invited to apply. Additional consideration will be given to applications that provide support or improve lives in the following priority areas: Savings & Assets, Family Sustaining Employment, Affordable Housing, or Manageable Expenses.
Letter of Intent applications are available at www.yourlocaluw.org/letter-intent and are due by January 13, 2017. Letter of intent submission is not a guarantee to be invited to apply for a grant.

Three Die In Smithville Fire

Three Smithville residents died in a fire over the weekend.  Two others were injured. According to wjle.com
Dead are 27 year old Jeremy Shelton, 36 year old Crystal Fults, and 4 year old Caylix Johnson. Two others, 26 year old Heather Standridge and 23 month old Brantley Johnson were injured.
In a prepared news release, Police Chief Mark Collins reported that “Police responded to 1276 South Mountain Street Sunday, December 4 at 12:16 p.m. for a structure fire with people possibly still in the residence. Five people were inside thehome at the time of the fire including 27 year old Jeremy Shelton, 36 year old Crystal Fults, 26 year old Heather Standridge, and her two children 4 year old Caylix Johnson, and 23 month old Brantley Johnson”.
According to Chief Collins, ” Jeremy Shelton and Crystal Fults perished in the fire. The children were rescued from the fire by Smithville firefighter, Lt. John Poss and a passerby, Jerry Estes. Estes was passing the residence when he saw the trailer on fire and Heather Standridge standing outside the trailer yelling that her children were still inside. Mr. Estes then climbed through the window where the children were reported to be and rescued 23 month old Brantley Johnson. A short time later, Lt. Poss arrived on scene where he entered the structure and rescued four year old Caylix Johnson who later passed away at the hospital. Heather Standridge and 23 month old Brantley Johnson are currently in ICU at Vanderbilt”.
The investigation is still underway by the Smithville Police Department, Smithville Fire Department, and the Tennessee Fire Marshall’s Office. Chief Collins said the official cause of fire at this time is still undetermined.
 

Confrontational Driver Cited For License Revocation

A Morrison man who was close to being arrested for disorderly conduct due to his engaging attitude recently after a traffic stop will have his day in court in February to get his license issues straightened out .  According to Cannon County Sheriff’s Department reports, Deputies pulled over Mr. Robert Peck of Morrison, after he failed to yield to oncoming traffic from the Woodbury Farmer’s Coop parking lot.  Peck’s license was found to be revoked but it was eligible for reinstatement.  When the deputy explained about Peck’s status, Peck became acting more belligerent.  After the deputy told Peck that he was close to be arrested for disorderly conduct, Peck signed the release citation and voluntarily called a tow truck to have his car towed.    Peck was cited for driving on revoked/suspended license and failure to yield.  He will answer to the charges in Cannon County General Sessions Court on February 7th.

School Board Workshop Moved Up To Tonight. Other Meetings Announced

A couple of government meeting reminders.  The Cannon County Board of Education workshop which normally takes place on Tuesday on the week of the regular board meeting which takes place on Thursday has been moved up to tonight starting at 5:00 at the Cannon County Board Of Education offices.  The regular monthly meeting remains scheduled for this upcoming Thursday.
There will be a meeting of the Cannon County Budget Committee in the courtroom of the Cannon County Courthouse will take place Tuesday starting at 5:00.  
Another County Commission workshop will take place Thursday at 5:00 also in the courtroom of the Cannon County Courthouse.

Upperman Beats Cannon Friday Night. Lions and Lionettes Prepare For Owls and Tigers

It’s not quite yet time for the first high school basketball poll of the season, but if it were one might find the Upperman Bees and Lady Bees basketball teams near the top of the AA division.  Friday night the Cannon County ball teams traveled to Baxter to play one of the top teams in the state in both teams District 8-AA openers.  Neither game was close.  In the girls game the Lady Bees got out to a 29-6 end of first quarter lead as Cannon struggled against the Lady Bees full court press losing 77-30.  Madison Gaither led the Lionettes with 12 points in the game.  Lionettes fall to 2-4.
The Upperman Bees opened the boys game attacking and playing more aggressive than the Lions en route to a 28-7 end of first quarter lead.  The Bees continued to build leading by 31 at half then coasting to a 78-43 win over Cannon.  Trey Fann scored 11 to lead the way for the Lions who fall to 1-5 overall.

A great big thanks to all of you who registered to be a TN Achieves/TN Promise mentor.  Cannon County has met its quota.  You will start receiving emails containing information about mentor training and meetings at Cannon Co. High School you will need to attend in order to meet the students you will mentor for the next year.  The volunteer spirit is still strong in Cannon County, and our students certainly appreciate you for volunteering to help them with college transition.
 

Ball Teams Travel To Upperman For First District Contest

The Cannon County High School Basketball teams will start the district portion of the season in one of the toughest places in the conference, Baxter.  The Upperman Lady Bees fresh off a season that saw them in the State Championship game are already 6-0 and haven’t been challenged this season.  The Lionettes are 2-3 having lost to Red Boiling Springs in the Mitch Wilson Classic last Saturday.  The Upperman Bees are 5-1 and opened fans eyes when they ran over Warren County during the Cannon Classic last weekend while the Lions are struggling with a 1-4 record but having played several big teams.  Tonight’s game will start at 6:00.  WBRY AM-1540/FM 107.1 will have the live broadcast tonight starting at 5:50 with the pregame.  The game can also be heard streaming live on the website wbry.com.

5 Participating In Tour Of Homes Saturday

Saturday is a full day as the Christmas Season gets underway with a pancake breakfast at the Woodbury Lions Club Building.  The Breakfast features Santa Claus and everyone is invited to come meet him and get pictures taken with him.  Then at 12 noon it’s the annual Woodbury Lions Club Christmas Parade.  WBRY AM-1540/FM 107.1 will have the live radio broadcast of the parade.  You can also view the parade live through our WBRY AM 1540 FM 107.1 Facebook site.  At 4:00 the Woodbury Lions Club presents the annual Tour of Homes.  On the tour this year will be the homes of Joe and Lindsay Patterson on Cross River Drive, Holly Harwood on Pin Oak Drive, Birdsong Studio on West High Street, Sue Conley, Riverview Drive and The Woodbury Lions Club Building is on the Tour with the Christmas Village.  A Complete list of addresses and directions will be given at the Woodbury Lions Club Building once the tickets to the event are purchased.
