Commodity Loans Available For Producers

Commodity loans are currently available for producers of corn, wheat, and soybeans. Applicants must meet all eligibility requirements before receiving these USDA benefits. To be eligible, a producer must maintain continual beneficial interest in the crop from harvest through the earlier of the date the loan is repaid or CCC takes title to the commodity. Beneficial interest means retaining the ability to make decisions about the commodity; responsibility for loss or damage to the commodity; and title to the commodity. Once beneficial interest in a commodity is lost, the commodity is ineligible for loan – even if the producer regains beneficial interest. These loans provide producers with immediate financing on their stored commodities held as loan collateral. Instead of selling the crop immediately after harvest, these loans allow the producer to store the crop for a maximum of 9 months to allow for market gains in the event of a depressed market at the time of harvest. Applicants should allow 7-10 workdays for processing and disbursing the loan proceeds. Loans can be approved beginning at harvest and ending May 31. (Exception: Wheat ends March 31). The 2014 crop year commodity loans rates for DeKalb and Cannon Counties are as follows:Corn—$2.05 / bu. Soybeans—$5.13/ bu. Wheat—$2.60/ bu.
For January 2015, the CCC interest rate for marketing assistance loans is 1.125%.
Violating provisions of a marketing assistance loan may trigger administrative actions, such as assessing liquidated damages, calling the loan and denial of future farm-stored loans.
For more information, call the DeKalb/Cannon County Farm Service Agency at 597-8225, extension 2.

Rematch No Contest As Cannon Rolls Over York

For the first two quarters of the Cannon York boys basketball game, it looked like the two teams were headed down the same direction that their previous meeting resulted in and that was a decision in overtime.  But then the Lions came out in the second half and held York scoreless for almost 6 minutes in the third quarter while they themselves rattled off 28 points and ran away with the game 80-64.  Cannon led by as many as 30 in the second half after York grabbed the lead by 1 at the end of the first quarter, the Lions reversed it and led by one at half.  Cannon turned it up a couple notches and with the turnovers the Dragons were frustrated to the point of committing a intentional foul.  That foul resulted in technicals being called on the Jamestown coaching staff.  Cannon who was already ahead by a comfortable margin, stepped up and hit five of six free throws and extended the lead.  Josh Reuhlan finished with a game high 24 while  AJ Daniel scored 20 in the Lions roll.  Cannon improves to 21-5 on the year 11-1 in district 8-AA play and have won their 8th consecutive game in a row. Senior night at Cannon County High School started out with the Cannon County Lionettes not only getting a much needed win in the district but a decisive one at that.  Kelli Davis had a game high 18 points on the night as she connected 4 times from near McMinnville it seemed.  Kendra Maynard followed with 14 while Kristin Hale also connected 4 times from behind the three to coast to a win 77-29.  The win puts Cannon one game back from evening out their district record.  The Lionettes are 18-7 and 5 and 6 in district play.  Their next game will be on the road to Baxter to meet Upperman Friday night.
