Lions Become Regular Season Champions

Not even close this time.  The Lions ran off early and never looked back in a 72-51 game against second place Livingston in Woodbury.  Josh Reuhlan 28 points for the Cannon County Boys who are 23-5 overall 12-1 in district play. Autumn King scored 13.  Erin McReynolds led with 15 in a Lionette loss to Livingston 60-55.  Down 58-55 with seconds left to go Kristin Hale attempted a three pointer for the tie that took its time deciding whether or not to go through the net. The ball rattled out and Livingston was able to get it down the court for the easy transition that ended the game.  Lionettes are 5-8 in District, 18-9 overall  going into Thursday’s road trip to Dekalb.

Final Home Game Of Basketball Regular Season Is An Important One Tonight

Two teams who went through a successful January meet up tonight for what will determine what happens to the regular season district champions as the Cannon County Lions meet the Livingston Wildcats at Robert A Harris Gymnasium in Woodbury.  Cannon went undefeated in the month of January and set atop District 8-AA with an 11-1 record.  Livingston lost only one game in the first month of the year and that was the previous meeting when Cannon squandered a big lead but rolled out of Livingston behind Jacob Nave’s three point overtime buzzer beater to win 73-72.  If Cannon wins tonight they’ll clinch the regular season top spot as the loss would not only mean a season sweep of the Cats but also a  two game lead in the standings with one game left on the schedule.  If Livingston wins, they’ll tie for first and then the focus will be on that last regular season game.  Both teams play their rivalries in the last game of the season meaning Upperman plays Livingston at Livingston on Thursday.  The Cannon County Lionettes will try to move one more step closer to evening out their district record.  The Lionettes have had several chances to do so throughout the month of January but even though they’ve been able to stay in the contests against opponents in the top half of the district, they’ve yet to pull out a win.  Tonight offers the best chance to do that against second place Livingston.  The Lionettes are 5-7 in District 8-AA  Tonight’s final home game of the regular season will tip off at 6:00 with the girls game.  WBRY will have the live broadcast on AM-1540/fM96.7.  We will also stream the game live on wbry.com and through the Smartphone and Tablets through WBRY by using the Tunein Radio app

Drunk Driver Hits Two Cars On Blues Hill

A Cannon County man who left the scene of a property damage accident recently was arrested and charged with several counts.  According to Cannon County Sheriff’s Department reports, Deputies were sent to an area of Blues Hill Road in regards to a reckless driver call.  A few seconds later, dispatch advised that the reckless driver had hit a car head on.  After arriving on Blue Hill, Deputies found the vehicle sitting in the middle of the roadway.  Deputies made contact with Ronnie Barrett of Woodbury who simply stated to Deputies that he was drunk.  Dispatch ran his information and it returned Habitual Motor Offender and DUI.  The other two vehicles that were hit by Barrett had minor damage to each.  Deputies took Barrett to the Stones River Hospital to obtain blood for a blood alcohol test.  Barrett was booked into the Cannon County Jail with DUI 1st offense, Driving On A Revoked License 4th offense, Habitual Motor Offender and two counts of leaving the scene of a property damage accident.  He will answer to the charges March 24th in Cannon County General Sessions Court.

Westside Wins Two Basketball Tournaments In One Day

25-0 and two tournament championships under their belt in one day was the result of the weekend the Westside Eagles junior high basketball team turned in from Saturday.  The first championship was the James C. Haile State Invitational Tournament Championship as the Westside Eagles beat Morrison School 39-37 in the Class Single A Division.  Head Coach Roger Haley was named Coach of the Tournament and the West Side Cheerleaders took home the Spirit award.  The day wasn’t done yet for the Eagles basketball team as they had to travel back home to Woodbury for the Championship game of the County Tournament vs Woodland.  At the end of the game the Eagles carried that championship trophy back to Westside School too.

Lions Finish Undefeated In January

The Cannon County Lions finished the month of January undefeated but it definitely wasn’t easy.  The Lions faced Upperman in Baxter Friday night and after falling behind by 9, the Lions came back and tied it up at the end of the first quarter.  Cannon continued to force Upperman to play up tempo in the second quarter and the Lions grabbed a 10 point lead at half.  Upperman would not let the game get away and towards the end of the fourth quarter had an opportunity to tie the game and possibly force overtime.  But what appeared to be an over and back call that was not whistled, the Lions were able to get a fast break out of it and score to cushion the lead by four en route to a 63-57 win. Josh Reuhlan paced the Lions with 24 points   The Lions move to 22-5 on the year with two games left on the schedule.   The Cannon County Lionettes were able to keep pace with the District leading Upperman Lady Bees but couldn’t quite get over the hump.  Once again a big third quarter from Upperman forced the Lionettes to make a comeback.   The Lionettes got as close as 6 before falling 39-36 with the final 3 point attempt for Cannon counting at the buzzer.  Kristen Hale led the Lionettes with 11.

Teams Travel To Baxter For Big District Games Tonight

It’s on the road to Baxter as the Cannon County Lionettes meet the Upperman Lady Bees.  The Lionettes are once again one game shy of an even District 8-AA record.  Tonight would be a huge win for the girls team as they have played well against the top teams in the conference but haven’t been able to get that one big win so far this season against District opponents.  A win tonight on the road in a tough place to play would put the Lionettes back in the thick of things heading into the District Tournament.  Upperman won the previous meeting by 7 57-50.  The Cannon County Lions have the opportunity to finish the month of January undefeated.  The Lions are winners of 8 in a row.  Cannon was able to escape with a 60-54 win in Woodbury back on January 6th.   Cannon watched a big lead go down the drain in that contest and almost gave it to Upperman.  The Lions are playing better basketball and once they get out to a big lead are able to maintain those leads at this point. Games from Baxter will tipoff at 6:00 tonight and you can catch all the action on AM-1540/FM96.7 WBRY, streaming online at wbry.com and through WBRY on your smartphones and tablets through the TuneIn Radio app.
