Lions Pounce On Golden Eagles Advance To Region Semifinals Lionettes Also In Action Tonight
The Cannon County Lions were bound and determined that they weren’t going to be the reason why the remainder of the boys portion of the Region 4-AA tournament would have to play out at Sequatchie County High School. You can blame that fact now on Macon and Smith Counties who lost their opening round games to their District 7-AA counterparts. Tuesday night, head coach Matt Rigsby warned that he expected the Lions to come out rusty in their opening round game against Signal Mountain, after all they played in a span of over twenty days just three basketball games. But it didn’t take the Lions long to shake off that perceived rust, in fact just the first play and the Lions were off and running and showed why they were the number one seed out of District 8-AA as they upended Signal Mountain 68-39. Rust was not even a factor. Josh Ruehlen went 5 for 6 in the first quarter scoring 13 of his game high 22 points in the opening frame. Garrett McReynolds added 10 in the win. The Lions now take their 13 game winning streak and 26-5 record to Sequatchie County Thursday night to face Notre Dame who is 15-15 overall. Region 4-AA tournament action starts tonight with WBRY’s live coverage of the Cannon County Upperman girls region semifinal game Tipoff is slated at 7:30 . You can catch that game in its entirety on AM-1540/FM96.7 WBRY, streaming online at wbry.com and with your smartphones and tablets through WBRY using the TuneIn Radio app

Anonymous Call Leads To Arrest Of Man On Trespassing Charges
Cannon County Deputies while offering mutual aid to the Woodbury Police Department recently arrested a Woodbury man and charged him with criminal trespassing and violation of a court order. According to Cannon County Sheriff Department reports Deputies went to a South Ridge Apartment address after the 9-1-1 center received an anonymous call that stated that Wesley Scott had been staying in the apartments with his wife. The center further specified there was an existing court order signed by Judge Susan Melton in December prohibiting Mr. Scott from having any direct or indirect contact with his wife due to a previous domestic violence charge. Furthermore Mr. Scott was prohibited from being on the property by the South Ridge’s property manager. Police went to the apartment where they found Mr. Scott hiding inside a back bedroom closet. He was placed under arrest without incident.

USDA Accepting Applications For Conservation Stewardship Program
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will make available $100 million this year through the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and although applications are accepted all year, farmers, ranchers and forest landowners should submit applications by March 13, 2015 to ensure they are considered for this year’s funding (applications received after that date will be considered for future funding). This year’s investment may result in the enrollment of up to 7.7 million acres in the program by private landowners.
“CSP is a way of providing an incentive to farmers, and private forest managers who maintain a high level of conservation on their land and agree to adopt higher levels of stewardship,” said Kevin Brown, Tennessee State Conservationist, of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. “By focusing on multiple resource concerns, landowners are able to achieve a sustainable landscape and maintain or increase the productivity of their operations.”
Through CSP, participants take additional conservation steps to improve the resource conditions on their land, including soil, air and habitat quality, water quality and quantity, and energy conservation.
Brown said CSP producers are conservation leaders, showing how science-based conservation and technological advancements can improve the environment and farming operations at the same time. For example, Tennessee farmer, John Verell uses cover crops to improve the soil health in his fields. He uses precision agriculture when applying fertilizer and pesticide on his wheat, corn and soybean fields. He has previously improved wildlife and timber resources on his forestland. This stewardship of natural resources, incentivized through CSP, helps conserve energy and leads to cleaner water and healthier soil.
The 2014 Farm Bill brought changes to CSP including an expanded conservation activity list that will offer participants greater options to meet their conservation needs and protect the natural resources on their land. These conservation activities, called enhancements, include cover crops, intensive rotational grazing and wildlife friendly fencing.
“CSP is a great addition to our conservation toolbox for our Landscape Conservation Initiatives, which rally together landowners at the broader level to make conservation improvements that help us tackle our nation’s resource issues,” Brown said. “Historically, other conservation programs have driven these initiatives, but now with CSP, we’ll be bringing more farmers, ranchers and forest landowners to these efforts.”
Applications should be submitted to local NRCS office located in Woodbury at 740 Old McMinnville Road. As part of the CSP application process, applicants will work with NRCS field personnel to complete a resource inventory of their land, which will help determine the conservation performance for existing and new conservation activities. The applicant’s conservation performance will be used to determine eligibility, ranking and payments.
A CSP self-screening checklist is available to help producers determine if the program is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, stewardship threshold requirements and payment types.
