Parent Teacher Conference Rescheduled
Due to the girls playing in the state tournament on Thursday, March 5, at 5:15, the high school parent/teacher conference is re-scheduled for Monday, March 23, 3:00-6:00.
Cannon County Fire Chief Underhill Celebrates 28 Years Of Service
On March 10, 2015, Michael Underhill will celebrate 28 years of service as a volunteer emergency responder in Cannon County. Michael joined the Cannon County Rescue Squad, Inc. and the Cannon County Fire Department in 1987. Since then he has achieved the rank of Chief Executive Officer for the Rescue Squad and Cannon County Fire Chief. Michael is a Tennessee certified Firefighter and he holds a certificate as a Level One Instructor from the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squad (TARS). As a Level One Instructor, he is qualified to teach the TARS basic vehicle rescue training program, emergency vehicle operations, and exposure control training. He has also obtained certifications in National Incident Management System (NIMS) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Michael is a Lifetime Member of the Mooretown Fire Department and the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads. Michael has served the Rescue Squad as Sergeant and as Captain (CEO). He has been the CEO of the Rescue Squad since 1992. Michael has been the Fire Chief of the Short Mountain Fire Department since 1994 and has been the Cannon County Fire Chief since 2012. Chief Underhill is a hometown hero in a community that is grateful for his service.
Outside of his involvement with the volunteer emergency services in Cannon County, he likes to be outdoors and enjoys farming. He is married to Cindy (Byford) Underhill and they have two beautiful daughters, Makayla and Kelsey.
We would like to thank Chief Underhill for all of the work that he is doing in Cannon County every day to help our citizens. He has been a driving force for growth and development of our rural volunteer fire departments and Rescue Squad.

Upcoming Events At The Cannon Libraries
The photography exhibit continues this week and if you haven’t been in to see the creativity of our local photographers, you need to stop in and take a look. But photography isn’t the only event at the library this week and you’re sure to find something to interest you. If you don’t, let us know what does interest you and we’ll try to bring that into the library. But for now, here’s what is going on:This week’s Story Timeconcerns ducks and chicks. Nothing better in the spring time than fluffy ducks and chicks so come in for a story. The fun begins onTuesday, March 10, at Adams and on Wednesday, March 11, at Auburn. Both begin at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 2 to 5.
Family story time is back on Saturday, March 14. Come to Adams at 11 a.m. for an enjoyable morning and then check out a few books to read that night.
March 9, finds a return of Café Conversations on the topic of Time. Oh, don’t we all have a lot to say about that. It is the most precious and fleeting of possessions. Monday, March 9, at 10:30 a.m. so don’t be late.
The second, and last, class of MS Power Point will be held on Wednesday, March 11 at 10:00 a.m. If you signed up for this class and attended the first session, you really don’t want to miss the last class. Power Point is a great tool to assist in all types of presentations.
Also on March 11, you can make a Springtime Candle Holder. Come to Adams at 10:30 a.m. and create a decorative item for your home or to give away. Spring is a great time to add a new, refreshing touch to your home or office.
A Novel Idea Book Club meets to discuss A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Kaled Hosseini on Wednesday, March 12, at 1 p.m. Afghan-American author Hosseini follows his best seller The Kite Runner with a novel about Afghan women and their lives in Afghan society. Come discuss the main characters and their relationships to each other, their world and their future.
Teens, the library still wants you. We want you to help us with teaching computer skills and assisting younger kids with their homework. We want you on the Teen Advisory Board — a fun group that will help the library and plan special activities for themselves. Who knows what you want better than you do? You can sign up for that at the circulation desk as well.
March is winding down but the programming keeps coming. Next week our new April newsletter comes out detailing all the new events and programs offered for the first month of spring. And don’t forget the Summer Reading Program coming in May with all its fun and exciting events. Please let us know if there is anything you’d like to see or do at the library because we are here to make the library what you want it to be.
East Side Arts Teacher Named Upper Cumberland Teacher Of The Year
Ms. Gay Burger a 6-8 arts teacher at East Side School has been chosen Teacher of the Year in the Upper Cumberland Region The Teacher of the Year program recognizes and honor outstanding teachers in Tennessee. The state of Tennessee applauds teachers who care about children, who devote their professional lives to enriching the lives of Tennessee children and who demonstrate exceptional gains in student achievement. Goals of the program are: Promote effective teaching practices by recognizing and rewarding outstanding teachers.
Encourage participation by every school in the state so that all Tennessee teachers may be recognized and rewarded.
Build a network of local and state corporate sponsors.
Provide a network for teachers to share effective practices
Encourage a sense of professionalism in teaching.
Encourage greater participation in building a strong community-school partnership
Arts Center Seeking Framed Vintage Cannon County Family Photos For New Exhibit
Working with the Cannon County Historical Society, the Arts Center is seeking framed vintage family photos from the breadth of Cannon County families. The images will go on display in Cannon Hall at the Arts Center beginning in April 2015 and will conclude with a Closing Reception in October 2015. Images need to arrive framed, ready to hang. We will also collect information, as available, about the work which will be displayed with each picture: who, when, where, why and the name of each family’s current oldest and youngest living relative.
There is room for 60 images. Ideally, one image each from 60 families.
Portraits will be hung as soon as they arrive, beginning immediately. This will be a show in process; images will be added until Cannon Hall is out of space.
“Bringing Cannon ancestry together in one room will help tell the Cannon story,” said Neal Appelbaum, Executive Director of the Arts Center.

Lions End Impressive Basketball Run At 15. Finish Season 28-6
The 2014-2015 basketball campaign for the Cannon County Lions began with a loss to Chattanooga Brainerd by 12. The season came to an end with a rematch in Woodbury Tuesday night against Chattanooga Brainerd with a loss by 12 57-45 in the sectional round of the postseason. The Lions came back from a big run by Brainerd to lead at halftime 28-25 but the athleticism of Brainerd was too much for Cannon as Brainerd forced Cannon to alter their shots, created turnovers and hit open jumpers and layup opportunities. Brainerd started their last run in the third quarter and increased their lead in the fourth. AJ Daniel led all scorers with 13 in his final game as a Lion. Garrett McReynolds fouled out with 11. Cannon’s winning streak stops at 15 and they finished off an incredible season with a 28-6 overall record.
Lions Rematch Vs Brainerd For Right To Go To Murfreesboro Tonight
The Cannon County Lions will get their chance for a shot at Murfreesboro tonight when they play host to the Chattanooga Brainerd Panthers. The only time these two teams met was the first game of the year when the Lions traveled to Brainerd for a Hall Of Fame Game and lost 70-58. Cannon has rattled off 15 consecutive wins coming into tonight and haven’t lost a game since the end of December. The Lions overall record is 28-5. Tickets for tonight’s game will go on sale at 5:45. Make sure you are there early enough as tickets sold out in a hurry and many fans were left out of the gym Monday night. Lionettes Punch Their Ticket To Big Dance In Murfreesboro
The Cannon County Lionettes punched in their ticket to Murfreesboro for the third consecutive year in a row as the Lionettes hosted a rematch of their last sectional game. The opponent Sequoyah Lady Indians. All five Cannon County starters scored in double figures as the Lionettes couldn’t put their opponents away. Sequoyah down by 7 with a couple minutes left started sending Cannon to the free throw line. Cannon would knock down the free throws but the Lady Indians started hitting three pointers to close the gap to 4. The clock was not on the side of the team from Madisonville as Cannon ran down the clock and won 62-60. Kristen Hale scored 14 to lead the team. Autumn King had 13. The Lionettes will next play in the Glass House at MTSU in Murfreesboro Thursday night at 5:15 against Martin Luther King who shocked previously unbeaten CPA 46-43.
