Lionettes Win Second Game Of Season

The Cannon County Lionettes fans caught a glimpse of what the rest of the season could be like as long as Kelli Davis and Autumn King carry the team on their shoulders.  The duo helped the Lionettes Tuesday night hold off a Macon County run by continually breaking a full court press in the fourth quarter.  Post player Maleah Scott also benefited from the tandem after she was found multiple times deep inside the paint for easy layups.  Scott and Davis both finished with 18, King with a game high 22 as the Cannon County Lionettes beat Macon County to earn their second win of the season and first win in District 8-AA play 77-61.  Addie Hale came off the bench to score 9 points on three three pointers as the Lionettes started settling into their roles as a team.  Cannon’s overall record is now 2-6 and 1-1 in District 8-AA. The Macon County Tigers boys basketball team returned a lot of players from last year’s squad.  Coming into the game the Tigers were expected to be in the thick of the District 8-AA race and even more so since they knocked off Livingston last Friday.  Cannon came into the game looking to rebound after a tough overtime loss to Central Magnet of Murfreesboro Friday night.  The game in the first quarter went back and forth between the two teams and it looked like at first it was going to be a close game.  However Macon County used a little run midway through the second quarter to open up a 14 point lead in which Cannon could not close the gap in and Macon County starts the district play with a 76-49 win over the Lions.  Once again the Lions struggled from 3 point range.  Briar Jakes led the team with 15 points while Austin Martin finished with 11.  Macon County placed 5 players in double figures.  The Lions fall to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in District play.  Next up for the Lions and Lionettes is a trip to nearby Carthage for a district 8-AA battle against Smith County Friday night.

Cannon Looks To Pick Up Wins vs Macon County Tonight

The second of four consecutive district basketball contests for the Cannon County Lions and Lionettes is tonight at Robert A Harris Gymnasium.  Both ball teams host the Macon County Tigers teams from Lafayette.  Both girls basketball teams are struggling in the early season to pick up wins.  The Lady Tigers have won two out of their last three but lost to Livingston by 19 Friday night.  The Tigers boys team should be one of the top teams in the District.  They are 6-1 overall with their last game a loss to Clay County Saturday night.  The Lions have dropped two straight including a disappointing loss in overtime to Murfreesboro Central Magnet.  Their record is now 3-4.  The Lionettes hope that the return of Autumn King can help in securing their second win of the year.  WBRY AM 1540/FM107.9 will have the live broadcast of the games tonight beginning at 5:55 for Coaches Corner and 6:00 for tipoff.  You can also hear the games live streaming on the website wbry.com and through WBRY by the Smart Phones and Tablets using the Tune In Radio app.

Cannon County Republican Party Ousts Chairman

The Cannon County Republican Party is looking for a new Chairman.  This past summer the Cannon County Republican Executive Committee requested that the State of Tennessee Republican Party Executive Committee remove Jim Gibbs from his role.  After a meeting last week of the State Executive Committee, the results of a nine member special investigative committee were released and it was the recommendation of each of the nine members that Mr. Gibbs be removed.  A representative of the Cannon County Executive Committee and Mr. Gibbs were given equal time to present evidence and call witnesses before the full Committee.  A vote was then taken afterwards and out of 54 Committee members present 50 voted for for removal, 3 votes to retain and 1 voted absent.  The Cannon County Republican Party Executive Committee stated that any future emails, editorials, private mail, commentaries or posts on all social media outlets made by Gibbs are of his opinion alone and do not reflect the opinions, beliefs or ideals of the Cannon County Republican Party Executive Committee or the members of the Cannon County Republican Party. The Cannon County Republican Party Executive Committee will meet Monday December 14th in a special called meeting at the Cannon County Courthouse at 6:00.

District Attorney General Will Not Seek Indictment Against Cannon County Sheriff’s Deputy

The Office of District Attorney General Jennings H. Jones announces that it will not pursue an indictment of Cannon County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Colwell for official oppression against Jim Gibbs former chairman of the Cannon County Republican Party.  The decision was made last week after Gibbs had sent a letter in October requesting that District Attorney Jones investigates the actions of Deputy Colwell during a Sept meeting of the Cannon County Republican Party.   Having examined all available evidence to include statements supplied by all parties that were present on the night of the event, as well as audio and video recordings it appears that Deputy Colwell had good faith belief that the argument between Gibbs and some of the other members of the Republican Party had advanced to the point that his intervention was necessary to prevent an assault from taking place attorney Jones stated. Gibbs had mentioned in his letter that he was removed from the meeting and that his video camera used to tape the meeting had been tampered with.  Attorney Jones also went on to state that Deputy Colwell was calm and non confrontational when removing Gibbs from the meeting and escorted him unharmed from the courtroom of the Cannon County Courthouse to the main floor of the building.  The punishment for  the charge of Official Oppression is harsh as the charge is a class E Felony which bears a sentence of one to six years, the loss of the right to vote, to own weapons, and the immediate removal of the Deputy from his job. Based on these factors it is the opinion of the Office of District Attorney that the punishment brought about by a charge of Official Oppression would greatly outweigh any harm that was suffered by Mr. Gibbs at the hands of Deputy Colwell.  As a result of the findings reached the Office of the District Attorney will decline to bring an indictment against Deputy Colwell for the charge of Official Oppression.  Gibbs was removed from his position as chairman of the Cannon County Republican Party.  More information will follow on that story on wbry.com
