THP To Monitor Interstate 40 During Holiday Period

Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Tracy Trott on Monday announced the second annual “Interstate 40 Challenge: The Drive to Zero Fatalities” traffic safety initiative during the Thanksgiving holiday period. The announcement was held at the agency’s Training Center in Nashville. Colonel Trott was joined by Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons, Governor’s Highway Safety Office Director Kendell Poole and Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police President Chuck Forbis and Tennessee Sheriffs’ Association Executive Director Terry Ashe.
The Interstate 40 Challenge will consist of increased patrols from state police or highway patrol agencies along the I-40 corridor in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee.  The challenge will take place on the busiest travel days of the Thanksgiving period, specifically from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30.
“Last year, Tennessee reported zero traffic fatalities on Interstate 40 during the challenge times,” Colonel Trott said. “We hope to have the same success this year and will again deploy our resources to help ensure a safe travel experience through our state on the busiest travel days of the Thanksgiving period.”
I-40 runs 2,555 miles through eight states, and has more miles in Tennessee than any other state with 455 miles. In 2013, Tennessee state troopers investigated 29 crashes on the Wednesday before and 36 wrecks on the Sunday after Thanksgiving during the I-40 challenge times. None of those crashes were alcohol-related.
THP personnel also issued 69 seat belt citations on I-40 on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving in 2013, coupled with 18 seat belt tickets on the Sunday after the holiday.  They also arrested four individuals on suspicion of impaired driving on I-40 on the two challenge days.
Commissioner Gibbons also requested a proclamation from Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam to raise awareness of this traffic safety campaign.  He presented the proclamation to Colonel Trott and the other highway safety representatives at today’s announcement.
Tennessee state troopers will be assigned every 20 miles of I-40 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30. Additionally, Colonel Trott has requested increased law enforcement visibility on all major interstates throughout Tennessee.  “We are hoping that a large law enforcement presence on the interstates will have an impact on driver behavior,” Colonel Trott said. “Drivers are encouraged to obey the speed limit, don’t drive distracted, aggressive or reckless, and above all, don’t drink and drive.”
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) also supports this traffic safety campaign and will promote the initiative on the Interstate 40 dynamic message boards.  During the Thanksgiving holiday, TDOT will also suspend lane closures beginning at Noon on Wednesday, Nov. 26 through 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 1.

McReynolds Leads Lionettes To Win. Three Lions Help Boys Coast

The Warren County Lady Pioneers may have broken the consecutive string of quarters that the Cannon County Lionettes have led opponents this early season but the Lionettes were able to get the stat that mattered the most….the “W”.  Lionette guard Erin McReynolds scored 13 of her game high 17 points as Cannon County outlasted Warren County 52-48 in the battle of early season unbeaten teams.  Autumn King spent most of the game in foul trouble as the Warren County’s post players were the strength of their team.  Out of 48 points, 25 points were scored inside including 18 from post player Karagan Turner.  Cannon becomes the only 8-AA team to notch a win against their next door neighbors as Warren had beaten Dekalb and Upperman already this year. The nightcap turned into a nightmare for the Warren County Pioneers.  The Lions got out to a huge lead before Warren County scored their first field goal with a little over three minutes to play in the first quarter.  The transition game was hitting on all cylinders as Cannon coasted to a 69-42 win.  The highlight reel flavored victory saw Josh Ruehlen, Jacob Nave and Garrett McReynolds lead the team in scoring with 10 points each.  Cannon’s record is now 3-1 as next up for the Lions and Lionettes will be in the Cannon Thanksgiving Classic Friday evening.

Lions and Lionettes Tune Up For Monday With Big Wins Over Coffee County

4 of the 5 starters for the Cannon County Lionettes scored double figures and the Cannon County Lionettes received the biggest challenge of the early season from the Coffee County Lady Red Raiders, but were able to secure a 13 point win Friday night 66-53.  Kelli Davis scored a team and game high 23 points for the Lionettes.  Cannon stretch out leads of up to 9 and 10 points but the Lady Red Raiders would come back and trim those leads down with key 3 point shooting from Sara Brown.  Davis and Erin McReynolds connected on several free throws to build the 13 point win.  McReynolds and Kendra Maynard each finished with 12 points while Autumn King scored 13.  The Lionettes are 3-0 Despite a multitude of Lion turnovers, the Lions basketball team was able to take control early in their game against the Coffee County Red Raiders and leave with a 67-45 win.  The full court press of Cannon County enabled the Lions to score easy points in transition but they also had trouble hanging onto the basketball.  Josh Ruehlen led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, Garrett McReynolds added 11 and Marshall McReynolds scored 10.  Cannon was able to break the game open by the end of the second quarter as they led Coffee 31-17
Monday night  Warren County comes to pay a visit to Woodbury as the Lady Pioneers are also undefeated at 7-0.  The Lady Pioneers are 2-0 against District 8-AA picking up wins against Upperman and Dekalb County in the last week.  The Pioneers boys team is 4-3.  Two of those losses have been handed to them by District 8-AA teams.  Monday nights games at Robert A Harris Gymnasium will start at 6:00.  WBRY will have the live broadcast starting at 5:50 with the Coaches Corner.  You can catch the games on AM-1540/FM96.7 WBRY.  Online at wbry.com and through the TuneIn Radio App on Smartphones and Tablets

Westside School Wins First Annual Battle Of The Books Contest

The Staff of the Adams Memorial Library announced the winner of the recent First Annual Book Battle Competition was the Westside School.  The contest was between all the Cannon County Schools.  The winner was decided by taking the number of books read by each school and dividing it up by the number of students to determine a percentage point.  This kept the final count close and gave each school a chance to win.  Coming in second place was Short Mountain.  Mrs. Kathy Gannon’s 2nd Grade class at Westside was the winning class room in the contest.  Her class read an outstanding total of 925 books.  In total all schools read a total of 2416 books during the contest.

Businesses Beware Of Misleading Solicitation

Secretary of State Tre Hargett is warning Tennessee corporations about a potentially misleading solicitation sent from an organization called the “Tennessee Council for Corporations.” The council, which is not affiliated in any way with the Secretary of State’s office, states in its solicitation that it will prepare annual “corporate consent records” for a corporation for a $125 fee.  Corporate consent records are internal corporate documents that a corporation may choose to prepare, but are not required to be filed with the Secretary of State’s office.  However, the solicitation is similar in appearance to the notice that the Secretary of State’s office distributes to businesses informing them of their obligation to file annual reports.Because this solicitation appears similar to an official government notice, it has the potential to mislead Tennessee corporations.  Similar misleading correspondence has been sent out by the organizations “Corporate Records Service” and “Annual Business Services,” neither of which are affiliated with governmental entities.
Secretary Hargett said: “I encourage Tennessee businesses to be cautious when providing private and confidential information, including credit card information, because there are several organizations sending these misleading letters.”
Businesses can call the Secretary of State’s Business Services Division at (615) 741-2286 to help determine the source of correspondence they may receive.   The Secretary of State’s website also has a user-friendly online annual report filing system for businesses, which can be accessed at https://tnbear.tn.gov/Ecommerce/AnnualReportInstr.aspx.
