Lions and Lionettes To Play First District Game Of The Season Tonight

The last two state tournament appearances the Cannon County Lionettes have made could have very well seen their opponent tonight on the other side of the court in the State Championship game.  The Macon County Lady Tigers state runner up in two out of the last three State tournaments come into Woodbury tonight as the school rejoins the district for the first time since the 2009-2010 sports season.  The Lady Tigers however are 1-3 and although the Lionettes can’t afford to overlook any district opponent especially this season, Macon County is rebuilding their girls basketball team.  Cannon County is off to a 7-0 start behind Madison Walkup and Abbey Sissom.  The boys matchup features the Cannon County team that fell to Middle Tennessee Christian School Saturday evening.  The Lions will get a chance to respond to that loss with a matchup against the Tigers.  The Tigers are 1-2 with losses to Riverdale and Westmoreland on their resume this year.  Live coverage of Cannon County High School Basketball will begin at 5:45 tonight with the coaches corner, followed by the tip off at 6:00.  You can hear the games on the radio live tonight at AM-1540/FM96.7 WBRY, online streaming at wbry.com and on the Smartphones and Tablets via TuneIn Radio at WBRY

Lionettes Still Undefeated, Lions Lose One During Mitch Wilson State Farm Classic

The Cannon County Lions and Lionettes finished the Thanksgiving weekend at Robert A Harris Gymnasium in Woodbury participating in the annual Mitch Wilson State Farm Classic.  Friday night the Lionettes were able to pull away from the Lincoln County Lady Falcons in the second half en route to a 64-43 win over the AAA school.  Abbey Sissom led the Lionettes in scoring with 21 points.  The Cannon County girls team then played Summit High School out of Spring Hill on Saturday.  The Lionette defense smothered the Lady Spartan offense into committing more than 20 turnover throughout the game as the Lionettes easily won 59-29 in the final game of the two day event.  The Lionettes record is 7-0 heading into Tuesday’s first district game of the season against Macon County. The Lions basketball team spread things out in the second quarter behind a 19-3 run against the Lincoln County Falcons.  Cory Henley scored a game high 18 points and Josh Ruehlen making his first start of the year responded with 8 points as the Lions grabbed a 58-30 win over the Falcons Friday night.  The Lions then got their toughest challenge of the early season in a game against Middle Tennessee Christian School Saturday.  The Cougars were undefeated at 6-0 and never let Cannon get a comfortable lead in the game.  The game came down to the wire and with 12 seconds left to go and Cannon trailing by two, the Lions rushed getting a shot off and the Cougars rebounded a miss, made two pressure free throws and kept their perfect season in tact with a 54-50 win over Cannon.  The Lions will now get ready for their first district game against Macon County which will take place at Robert A. Harris Gymnasium in Woodbury Tuesday starting at 6:00
