The Cannon County Lions and Lionettes take the floor at Robert A Harris Gymnasium tonight for a pair of contests against neighboring Coffee County Red Raiders and Lady Red Raiders from Manchester. The Lionettes are 4-0 after blowing by four opponents in two days last week. Abbey Sissom who signed with MTSU over a week ago will bring her 20 point game average on the home floor against the Coffee County Lady Red Raiders. The Manchester team is 1-2 having lost their last game played against the Grundy County Lady Jackets 58-55 a team that Cannon beat rather easily in their first game of the year. The Boys game should be a challenge for the Lions as Coffee County is 1-2 but they were able to make it look easy against Grundy County in their last game 74-36. High school basketball coverage will start at 5:45 tonight with the Coaches Corner followed by the tipoff at 6:00. Apply by Dec. 2 to be considered for MTSU academic scholarships
Prospective high school students wanting to have first priority for key academic scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year will have until Monday, Dec. 2, to apply.
Applications postmarked Dec. 2 or hand-delivered to the admissions office by 4:30 p.m. that day will be eligible to be considered for major scholarship awards and also the prestigious Buchanan Fellowship.
MTSU’s freshman academic scholarship deadline normally is Dec. 1. Because Dec. 1 falls on a Sunday this year and because MTSU will be closed Nov. 28-29 for the Thanksgiving holidays, the university will allow an extra day for prospective students and their families to submit the paperwork and include the nonrefundable application fee.
Prospective students and their families can visit the admissions website, http://www.mtsu.edu/admissn/, to learn more. For important dates, visit http://www.mtsu.edu/admissn/dates_admissn.php. For scholarship information, visit http://www.mtsu.edu/scholarships/.
The Buchanan Fellowship for top scholars is MTSU’s highest academic award for first-time freshmen who meet academic requirements, including a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher, a composite ACT score of 29 or higher or SAT greater than or equal to 1280 and other requirements (http://www.mtsu.edu/honors/scholarships.php). Twenty recipients are selected by the University Honors College, with funding provided through the financial aid office.
Successful Buchanan applicants generally possess qualifications that equal or surpass those required for other MTSU academic scholarships. Students accepted to the program participate in a specially designed cohort curriculum of courses limited to Buchanan Fellows.
Freshman academic scholarships include Chancellor, Presidential, Academic Service and Provost. All require a minimum GPA of 3.5, plus outstanding ACT/SAT scores.
“MTSU is an institution where if you bring us your best, we will do our best to make sure you succeed,” said Laurie Witherow, associate vice provost for admissions and enrollment services. “Any student who meets our admissions standards can be successful and we pledge to have all of the programs and resources in place to support you through to graduation.”
For students who qualify for National Merit/Achievement/Hispanic, Valedictorian/Salutatorian and International Baccalaureate scholarships, the priority deadline is Feb. 15, 2014. However, they should apply by Dec. 2 to be considered for additional academic scholarships.
For more information, call the admissions office at 615-898-2111 or the scholarships office at 615-898-2830.

GED Test-Retake Policy Eased as Deadline for Passing Current Version Nears
Tennesseans aspiring to pass the current version of the GED® test before the end of 2013 can take advantage of an expanded test-retake policy just announced by the GED Testing Service, according to Labor & Workforce Development Administrator Marva Doremus. The change enables more people to retake the test before the present GED test version expires December 31, 2013.
“The GED test is given in three forms. People who have taken all three versions of the GED test this year are allowed to retake the test or certain parts as long as it has been 60 days since the test-taker took that particular form of the test,” said Doremus. Previously, test takers were limited to take the GED test three times per year.
The change in the retake policy is especially aimed at assisting those who have started the GED test but have not finished and passed every section. All scores will expire at the end of this year, and test-takers will have to start over with the new revised GED test or the alternative high school equivalency test called HiSET™ that will also be offered in Tennessee.
For details on taking the GED test or retaking certain parts before the close of 2013, contact the Adult Education Division of the Department of Labor & Workforce Development at 1-800-531-1515 or visit the department’s Website at http://www.tn.gov/labor-wfd/AE.
Bypass Project Needs Funding According to TDOT
Unless the United States Congress comes up with a new bill to fund the Highway 70S Bypass, the project itself will continue to stall. Wes Hughen with the Tennessee Department of Transportation gave an update to the Cannon County Commission about the project. Hughen passed out 6 maps of the project itself. Hughen said that there is a Transportation Planning report that selected some alternates for the environmental document that TDOT must have. Hughen stressed that the County needs to decide what kind of road they want whether it be a 2 lane, or a 4 lane and where they want it. Then the County must get together with its Regional Planning Organization to determine if this project is significant for the county. However the Tennessee Department of Transportation operates under no debt whatsoever and because TDOT would be short on funds by almost a million dollars this will be a project that if the preliminaries were started now would not be completed until at least 15 years from now. The Cannon County Planning Commission will be talking about this issue in upcoming meetings.
