More than 750 Motlow College students earned academic honors on the dean’s list and honor roll for the fall 2012 semester, according to Dr. MaryLou Apple, president of the college.To be listed on the dean’s list, full-time students must attain a semester grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher based on collegiate-level classes. To qualify for the honor roll, full-time students must have a semester GPA of 3.0 to 3.49 on collegiate-level work.

Cannon County Republican Party Holds Organizational Meeting February 4th
The Cannon County Republican Party in compliance with the State of Tennessee Republican Party By-Laws will hold a reorganization meeting on February 4th, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the Cannon County Courthouse. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this meeting.During this reorganization meeting we will accept nominations for the offices of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer, Vice-Treasurer and Secretary. These officers will serve a two year term beginning February 2013 until the next reorganization held in 2015.
Please be aware that the rules and qualifications governing who may become officers have changed since the last reorganization meeting in 2011. Individuals seeking to become county officers must have voted in the last three Republican Primary Elections, be active within the county party or a recognized auxiliary organization and be able to be vouched for to the satisfaction of the State Chairman as a bona fide Republican.

Cannon County Jr. High Basketball Tournament Starts Tonight
With the regular season of the Cannon County Jr. High Basketball seasons over, the focus now turns to the end of the season 2013 County Basketball Tournament. A full slate of games takes place tonight at the Robert A Harris gymnasium. The schedule gets started this afternoon at 4:00 as the 3rd seeded Woodland Lady Warriors meet the 6th seeded Eastside Lady Tigers. The second game is a boys quarterfinal as the 3rd seeded Woodbury Grammar Cubs will face the 6th seeded Short Mountain Bears. The third game of the evening finds the Short Mountain Lady Bears the number 4 seed on the girls side taking on the 5th sided West Side Lady Eagles and the final quarterfinal will be a boys matchup between the 4th seed Eastside Eagles and 5th seed Woodland Warriors . Semifinals will be played Thursday with Consolation and championship games on Saturday.
Stolen Cell Phone Nets Theft Over $500 Charge
A Brush Creek man was arrested recently by the Cannon County Sheriff’s Department after a cell phone was found in his possession. According to police reports 32 year old Jonathan Edgar Payton was stopped by Deputy Travis Turney. A search of his vehicle produced the stolen cell phone which was taken from Jerry Pelham’s Auto Salvage. Payton was charged with Theft over $500. A check on Payton’s license came back suspended for a 6th time. Payton was also charged with Driving on a Suspended License. Payton made bond and will answer to the charges in Cannon County General Sessions Court March 5th
Save Money By Registering For Grain Conference By Today
If you are wanting to register for the 8th annual Middle Tennessee Grain Conference which is set for Thursday January 31st at the Coffee County Fairgrounds in Manchester, you can save money by registering today through the Cannon County UT Extension office. Registration is just ten dollars through today only. Otherwise it will be twenty dollars at the door. Registration Thursday will start at 7:30 in the morning. Registration fees include the program and materials, refreshments, lunch, a copy of the conference proceedings and a grain conference cap. This program, like all UT extension programs, is open to all eligible persons, regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability or veteran status. Highlights of the conference includes a trade show of various seed, chemical and equipment dealers will begin at 8 in the morning followed by a slate of speakers addressing current production topics for corn wheat and soybeans. Community Celebration Tickets Still Available
Tickets are still available for the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties annual Community Celebration on Thursday February 21 at 11:30 in the morning at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro. Reservations and payments are required by Friday February 15. Tickets are $10 per person for open seating or $150 for a reserved table of ten. Reservations may be made online at uwrutherford.org United Way’s Community Celebration serves as an opportunity to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments and impact on the community as well as recognize corporate partners and volunteers of United Way.

Lionettes Back In First Place
The Cannon County Lionettes are back on top of the district standings. Friday night the Livingston Lady Wildcats pulled into Woodbury with their sights set on keeping the top spot of the district all to themselves. The Lionettes grabbed a 6-0 lead to start the game and after two ties early in the first quarter, Cannon was able to gain a small cushion lead and go into halftime leading 31-25. The Lionettes kept up the pressure in the second half causing six Livingston turnovers in the fourth quarter. The Lionettes were able to convert those into points pulling away and winning 59-47. Abbey Sissom led the scoring for the Lionettes with 25 points while Abby Jakes added 13. Cannon moves to 21-3 with a 7-2 first place district record. The Cannon County Lions fell behind early in the boys game but were able to stay within striking distance throughout the game in the first half. Cannon would struggle in the second half as Livingston would go on to win 64-50. Cory Henley led the Lions with 23 points. With the loss Cannon still remains in 4th place in the district at 5-4 and their record falls one game below 500 at 11-12. Next up is the trip to Baxter Tuesday night to visit Upperman High School. Livingston Pays A Visit To Woodbury
If you are a high school basketball fan, there’s no better place to be tonight than at the Robert A Harris Gymnasium in Woodbury as Tonight it’s a battle of two of the state’s top basketball programs as the 3rd ranked Livingston Academy Lady Wildcats come to Woodbury to play the 6th ranked Cannon County Lionettes in a district war that plays implications on the top of the district standings. If Cannon wins, they will take over first place due to the fact that they beat Livingston at the start of 2013. If Livingston wins, they are in first place as they only have the one district loss on their record. Cannon won at Livingston 64-62. The Boys matchup is also important for the district race. If Livingston wins, they remain in second place. If Cannon can get the upset tonight in Woodbury, they will move up tied with Livingston for third place depending on how Upperman does this evening both teams could vie for second place.
