Angela King, former director of the Cannon County REACH Afterschool program was arrested on a sealed indictment last Friday. King was indicted by the Cannon County Grand Jury on one count of forgery and one count of theft of property. She allegedly passed a counterfeit check at a local bank in Woodbury. The charges are not in any way connected with her tenure as the REACH Director. King posted $7500 bond and was released. She has waived arraignment which was scheduled to take place in Cannon County Circuit Court Friday. Plea Day is set for Friday March 9th

Auburntown Lions Club Sponsoring Easter Egg Hunt
The Auburntown City Council met Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:00 PM for their regular monthly meeting. The Mayor and all Councilpersons were present for this meeting. The minute for the previous month of January were distributed to the council for their review and approval. After a short review the minutes were approved as presented by the City Recorder.
The financial report ending January 31, 2012 was passed out for review and approval. Following a cursory review the report was approved as presented. The balance of funds on deposit was $46,164.26.
The Mayor announced that the Lions Club was sponsoring the community Easter egg hunt again this year in C. S. Hawkins Park. The event will be held on the Saturday before Easter Sunday, which falls on April 8th this year.
The repair of the City Hall building was discussed extensively. It seems that a lot of the repair is necessitated by water running down the inside of the walls from the roof. The repair work is planned for later this year just as soon as warmer weather will permit.
The Mayor announced he would soon be preparing an amended budget to cover the adjustment cost of certain line items. He also mentioned each councilperson should be thinking of the regular budget for FY 2012 –13, as it will be upon the City all too soon.
Along this line, the City is expecting to participate in the joint venture with the city of Woodbury and Cannon County to display a night of fun and fireworks the Fourth of July in Dillon Park. It is included in this year’s budget and hopefully it can see be included in next year’s also.
Cannon County Board Of Education Meets Tonight
The Cannon County Board Of Education will meet tonight and some of the items on the agenda include Woodbury Grammar School principal Bonnie Patters will address the board to give an update on a University Grant as well as talk about re striping the Woodbury Grammar School parking lot and showcase the cub club. Connie Foster and Lisa Black will update the Board concerning Safe Routes to School grants for 2011 and 2012. Bill Bowman will address the board concerning disposing of two vehicles and purchasing one vehicle for the vocational class physics class collaboration and there will be a discussion of the service labor agreement with Trane for the Woodbury Grammar School. The meeting will take place at 6:00 at the Cannon County Courthouse
Cannon County 4-H Livestock Judging Team Competes In National Convention
Pictured above is the 2012 Cannon County 4-H Livestock Judging Team, who competed recently in the beef judging events at the NCBA national convention held recently at Nashville. The team competed with other teams and individuals from around the country to evaluate 10 different classes of beef heifers, steers, and bulls. In addition to the contest, the teams enjoyed learning and visiting the trade show, which hosted hundreds of suppliers to the beef industry. More Details On Cannon County Man Killed By Sheriff’s Deputies
More details have been obtained in the shooting incident late Monday night by Cannon County Sheriff’s deputies that left a man dead. The victim of the shooting is now known as Richard Butcher of 2044 Petty Gap Road. WBRY news has also learned the name of the two Cannon County Sheriff’s deputies but has been requested to hold those names until the Tennessee Bureau Of Investigation fully conducts their investigation of the case. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the deputies were in the area responding to a report of stolen scrap metal. The suspect was supposed to have been in a black pickup truck. according to TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm. The deputies stopped after they saw Butcher driving crazy in his yard in a black truck. The deputies then approached the man and open fire on him after he tried to run them over with his truck. The suspect was hit by the gunfire and later transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he later died. The TBI will turn over its findings once finished to the district attorney for further review. The investigation is expected to take more than a week. Butcher was scheduled to be in Cannon County General Sessions Court Tuesday morning to answer to a domestic assault charge.
Farm Service Agency Holds Public Meeting Today In Regards To Possible Consolidation
Cannon County farmers and ranchers and anyone else that is interested are invited to attend a public meeting today starting at 4:00 this afternoon till 6 tonight at the Woodbury Lions Club Building 630 West Lehman Street in Woodbury. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the proposal to consolidate the Cannon Farm Service Agency County office with the Dekalb or Warren County Farm Service Agency thus closing the doors on the Cannon County FSA office The meeting is hosted by the Tennessee Farm Service Agency Management team and will be the only public meeting held to take public comment on the USDA’s proposed plan. All comments will be taken into full consideration prior to development or implementation of a final consolidation plan.
Lions and Lionettes Both Grab Tigers By The Tail
The last time the Cannon County Lionettes played in Smithville, they were staring down at the scoreboard behind to the Dekalb County Lady Tigers. Cannon eventually came back and won the game. Last night however, Cannon applied the pressure early and vaulted out to a 17 to 1 first quarter score. The Lionettes would continue to dominate defensively as the Lady Tigers would score their first field goal in the game with 5:11 remaining before halftime. Abbey Sissom rang up a game high 28 points as the Lionettes improved their record to 22-6 over all with a 56-37 win over Dekalb County and is tied for third place in the district with York when York lost last night to Livingston. Both teams enter their respective Friday games with 6-5 district marks. It finally clicked. After suffering big point losses to the top teams in District 8-AA even after the fact the Lions would have a significant more shot attempts, The Lions took out their shooting frustrations on the Tigers. The Lions would connect on 25 of 51 from the field and led most of the game with a 13-15 point margin until a late rally by the Tigers closed the lead to only 3 with 30 seconds to play. Junior guard Jarrett Melton would step to the free throw line and knock down 11 of 14 free throws to help Cannon ward off the Tigers 74-70. Melton would finish with a game high 23 points while Cory Henley added 16. Brad Hutchins battled for 10 points before he went down to an injury in the second quarter. Cannon’s record overall is now 8-20 and 4-7 in district. The Lions climbed up a notch in the standings to fifth place after York lost to regular season district champion Livingston 61-39
Woodbury Man Shot And Killed In Encounter With Deputies
Authorities responded to reports of a black truck containing stolen metals at a home in Cannon County. According to wkrn.com, deputies encountered a man in the black truck allegedly circling doughnuts around the front yard of the residence at 2052 Petty Gap Road Monday night. The deputies were forced to open fire on the man after he attempted to run them over. The suspect was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he later died. The investigation is ongoing and the Tennessee Bureau Of Investigation will turn the case over to the District Attorney General for further review. Authorities are waiting to release the name of the suspect.
Rivals Cannon and Dekalb Clash Tonight In Smithville
Last week’s loss to then number one ranked Upperman dropped the Cannon County Lionettes out of the Associated Press Top 10 Poll. Upperman dropped to third in the new poll out last night after losing to Livingston last week. Livingston moves up into the 2nd spot. Cannon received 14 votes and are on the edge of getting back in. The Lionettes can send a statement tonight when they travel to nearby Smithville to face their rivals in the Dekalb County Tigerettes. Both teams are coming off of breaking two games losing streaks with wins in their last matchups. Cannon defeated Warren County Friday while Dekalb barely got by Central Magnet. This is the last district game of the regular season for Dekalb. The Cannon County Lions still have an outside shot to finish 4th in the 7 team District 8AA but they will have to win the last two district games and get some help from other teams to do so. The Lions have lost three in a row and they will meet a red hot Dekalb County Tiger team set for a first place tie in the district barring an upset tonight.
