American Legion Oratorical Contest This Month

American Legion Post 279 is inviting all 7th and 8th grade students of Cannon County Schools and Home School Students to participate in the 2019 Hilton Stone American Legion Post 279 Junior High School Oratorical Contest.    The purpose of the Oratorical Contest, “A Constitutional Speech Contest”, is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States, the development of leadership, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and preparation for the duties and responsibilities, rights, and privileges of American Citizenship. 
ELIGIBILITY:
All Contestants must be a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States of America in good standing and actively enrolled in the 7th and 8th Grades of a Cannon County Elementary/Grammar School or home school.
 
CONTEST INFORMATION:
The Oratorical Contest consists of one (1) speech of some aspect of the Constitution of the United States of America, selected by the contestant, with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government.   The Prepared Speech must be the original effort of each contestant and must not take up less than three (3) minutes or more than five (5) minutes for delivery.  Contestants may have in their possession a copy of their prepared oration and may consult this copy while delivering their speech.   It is recommended that the contestant select one of the Amendments or Articles of the Constitution to focus their speech.
 
KEY DATES:
Application Deadline:   Statements of intent to participate must be received by one or more of the Contacts listed, no later than March 22nd, 2019.
 
CONTEST DATE:
Saturday, March 23rd 2019, 10:00AM at the Senior Citizens Center, 609 West Lehman St., Woodbury, TN.
 
CONTEST AWARDS:
1st Place – $100; 2nd Place – $75; 3rd Place – $50. Participation without placing – $10.

Preparation and participation in the Junior High School Oratorical Contest will better prepare students for the American Legion High School Oratorical Contests.   Which could lead to a Tennessee American Legion  $3,000.00 scholarship and all expenses paid trip to the National Headquarters Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis, IN., where Scholarship Awards are: 1st Place – $18,000,  2nd Place $16,000, 3rd Place $14,000.
