County Jobless Rate Rises in June

Cannon County’s jobless rate went up in June. The rate was at 9.6 percent, up from 8.3 percent in May. Approximately 630 people in Cannon County are unemployed.

Jobless rates increased in 72 counties in June, decreased in 17 and remained the same in six counties. Tennessee’s overall unemployment rate for June was 10.1 percent, down three-tenths of a percentage point from May. The national unemployment rate for June was 9.5 percent.

Among Cannon County’s neighbors, Rutherford County’s unemployment rate was up from 9.1 percent to 9.3 percent. Wilson County rose one-tenth of a point, to 8.6 percent in June. Coffee County’s rate also went up a tenth of a point, to 10.6 percent. DeKalb County’s rate rose two-tenths of a point to 10.9 percent. Warren County’s jobless rate remains the highest in the area, at 11.9 percent.

Lincoln County registered the state's lowest county unemployment rate at 6.8 percent. Scott County had the state’s highest unemployment rate at 20.9 percent, followed by Marshall County at 16.7 percent.

Knox County had the state’s lowest major metropolitan rate of 7.8 percent, Davidson County was 9.1 percent, Hamilton County was 9.1 percent, and Shelby County was 10.6 percent.
